What, bootleg?
“Bootleg toys” are unofficial, artist-made reinterpretations of familiar characters and objects — often playful, imperfect, and full of personality.
Inspired by that culture, Bootleg Pets reimagines pets as collectible art pieces, capturing their everyday quirks through a handcrafted bootleg toy.
These aren’t toys for playing but handmade display pieces designed to live alongside your existing collection, hang on your wall, or sit quietly on your office desk as a small companion throughout the day.
how it started
In April 2026, I exhibited a series of “bootleg cats” inspired by the neighbourhood cats I grew up with, titled “I don’t own cats but I grew up with them.” The three handcrafted pieces were part of TOKONOMA’s all-cats group show, “TOXOPLASMOSIS.”
By the end of the exhibition, two pieces had been adopted, while one (my favourite) returned home with me.
This experience inspired me to extend the project beyond the gallery space. Through Bootleg Pets, I now hand-sculpt and assemble one-of-one collectibles individually in my art style, allowing pet owners to own a handcrafted art object inspired by their companions in their everyday moments.
